This graphic image (courtesy of COMSOL, Inc., www.comsol.com) shows a patch antenna, similar to one that might be found in your cell phone, PDA, or laptop computer. Two coaxial cables (the two yellow tubes) channel energy into a radio-frequency resonator represented by the rectangular patch in the middle of the image. The splash of color around the patch edges depicts the electromagnetic waves that are emitted by the antenna to carry information signals. Besides being relevant to one of the many technology areas that the Firm handles for its clients, this image can be viewed as symbolizing the practice of patent law. The inventors and patent practitioners apply their creative energy to drafting patent applications. Since most patent applications eventually become public documents, they carry to the public a never-ending stream of information unmatched by any other source.
